Session 11

Visual conversation at dada.art

We talk about how creating the right environment for a community works as a way of organically maintaining good behavior, and can even work without the need for manifestos, rules, and voting structures, and can be extended beyond the artists at DADA to its coders, collectors, and other contributors. Primavera gives an introduction to extitutional theory. Super interesting, take a look:

Joshua: ❤

Sebnem: ❤

Ilan: We have been actively trying to shut them off. Just gets in the way of the real experience.

Judy: That’s part of the DADA Effect.

Ilan: If it’s ridiculous… then we are on the right track!

Joshua: Is safety an intrinsic reward?

Sparrow: To me, it all comes back to the environment. In an environment of leaderboards and competition, optimised for growth or financial gain, any intrinsic motivation gets smothered. Outside of that environment, by nurturing and protecting intrinsic motivations we create an environment of collaboration, stability, and abundance.

Ilan: Like a nature reserve. :)))

Ser Ste: Incredibly enough, nature reserves do generate profit.

Judy: But the profit goes back to the reserve, no?

Joshua: And don’t we, as a community, want to optimize the profit gained? What if the collective community voted to support more extrinsic collectors? What would you do?

Ilan: It would not be done through a vote but through deliberation? So if it’s a conversation between people contributing drawings and people contributing financially, then it’s about determining needs. Something that is currently almost non-existent in most of the ‘crypto art’ space?

You pronounce it perfectly :)

Ser Ste: Yes, Judy… the cool thing is that the metaphor works also for the creation of valuables that cannot be commodified, such as the health benefits of a walk in a forest for example.

Sparrow: ❤ @ serste

Lenara: My super basic breakdown of IE I told Ilan the other day is:

  • people make art
  • art has value
  • we want to monetize this value
  • current exchange flows (selling on markets, fostering speculation, etc) are detrimental to art-making by killing intrinsic motivations, etc.
  • IE is a way to hack this exchange flow, preserving intrinsic motivations and distributing money as means of increasing life security for the people making the art and creating the value. (And I guess you can substitute “art” by “code” and other activities)

Ilan: Well… some of us do… but resist it :)

Sebnem: Anything creative.

Lenara: Thanks Sebnem yes, anything creative.

Ilan: I am referring to the money bit.

Joshua: Okay, fork = governance failure.

Sebnem: For Invisible Economy, if fork introduces extrinsic rewards

Joshua: Things we want to optimize for: intrinsic rewards for all participants subject to the constraint that there are significant extrinsic rewards (enough to support all (?) classes of participants / provide safety).

Sebnem: Correction= if fork makes extrinsic rewards the driving force.

Joshua: Do we want to provide safety for collectors as well?

Sparrow: I don’t know that it would be a failure. If the original community is protected, that’s our goal so, success?

@Joshua — yes, safety for collectors as well — everyone who contributes value to the community.

Sebnem: Collectors’ actions will also mint DADA token, and <when they acquire the DADA effect> they will be able to burn-to-withdraw their DADA tokens as well like any other participant… we might have additional conditions on time, and type, etc. but yes.

@Sparrow — Joshua’s edge case is what if the majority/community wants extrinsic rewards and leaderboards and starts developing features for it, how do we decide on release?

Sparrow: @Sebnem, that’s what I was referring to when I said that this is our hypothesis — that our community would not, by definition, want to do this. So, I guess I don’t see it as a failure of governance, but a more pervasive failure to instill ‘the DADA effect’.

Sebnem: Exactly :)

See you next time!
